Non-insurance alarms can be useful for some individual requirements. They are usually a slightly cheaper choice, useful if the customer is sure they are never going to need Thatcham and Insurance approval. However, if there is any uncertainty, we recommend choosing a Thatcham approved device as non-approved systems cannot be upgraded later.
These systems may use shock-sensors to trigger the car alarm device. Shock sensors will trigger if a car door is opened or a window is smashed, as the sensors are sensitive to vibrations associated with the car. These devices detect the same intrusions as Insurance compliant devices, and are arguably as efficient, but have never been recognised by Thatcham. Some of these systems also use ultrasonic interior protection for extra protection.
Each non-Thatcham alarm is car dependent and some of the older alarm systems will only work with analogue wiring. We can advise you on the best device for your car, and your needs.
For shock and ultrasonic protection, with multiple auxiliary outputs we recommend the viper 3102v vehicle security system. Viper and Clifford are both produced by Directed and this product is therefore also Clifford SmartStart compatible.
For some vehicles we will recommend the Scorpion SA30 alarm. It is easy to use and reliable, suited for older non-CANBus cars and vans.
We also fit the Clifford Arrow 5.1 alarm system. This is ideal for customers who enjoy the Clifford branding with 2 small 3-buttom remotes.
If you need a Thatcham alarm this will be specified by your car insurance company. Thatcham have a set rules that keep the process of testing fair between different manufacturers. Non-Thatcham car alarms can be equally good at protecting your vehicle but are usually slightly cheaper.
