A Smartrack S5 vehicle tracker is a Thatcham and Insurance Approved GPS tracking device. This is an S5 VTS System and comes with two proximity keys, battery low and disconnect alerts, movement alert and European coverage included in the monitoring fee.
SmarTrack Category S5 VTS supplied and fitted for £499 (plus monitoring fee).
A Category S5 car GPS tracking device are often required by UK car Insurance companies. Once a make and model of car have been given a Category S5 allocation, that stays with the vehicle and is usually insisted on by all insurers. For this reason, once your insurance company has asked for a Cat S5 there is usually no negotiation possible.
The basic Category S5 comes with two Driver Recognition System (DRS) proximity keys also known as Thatcham ADR Automatic Driver Recognition tags. One of these needs to be carried by the driver when the car is driven. If the vehicle is moved without one of the tags being present, then an alert is sent to the SmarTrack Monitoring Station and they will call the owner, to confirm the vehicle is safe.
This Smartrack tracker has the ability to be re-installed into a new vehicle on upgrade. This can provide long-term cost savings by keeping the same device and Smartrack have designed their products to be robust in this way.
Please note this can only be done by a Smartrack Approved Installer and we charge a fee for taking out the tracker and again for re-installation.
The annual tracker monitoring cost for this system is £159 per year, paid directly to Global Telemetrics. This is the parent company of Smartrack and they provided tracking for other companies that have rebranded products for individual purposes.
For an easy to manage solution this cost can be paid monthly by direct debit for £13.49 per vehicle, per month (minimum 12-month contract).
Paying for two years in advance will cost £269 and for three years £369.
Customers can also choose to pay for a 'Duration' payment of £599 and this is a great deal if customers have a cherish vehicle that they expect to own for a long time. Duration means the subscription is not transferrable to a new vehicle or to a new registered keeper, however Smartrack may be flexible on this if customers are still within their first year of subscription. Currently, the duration payment is cheaper than the future price of £699, however we are unsure when the future price will come into effect.
Smartrack have provided many flexible options when it comes to monitoring fees. Therefore customers should carefully consider how long they plan to keep the vehicle to get the best value for money.
There is a downloadable App available from the App Store or Google Play Store. This free App gives up-to-date location information as well as journey history.
Here you can set a geo-fence and receive alerts should the vehicle go outside this safe zone. These push notifications give battery low and battery disconnect alerts as well.
There is also the option to put the tracker into service mode. This temporarily disables all functions and is ideal when cars are in for servicing or similar. It is also ideal for when the vehicle is being transported on a loader or on a ferry where movement takes place without the ignition being live. However customers are responsible for turning this feature off and thereby returning the vehicle tracker to full functionality.
Additional vehicles can be added to the App and this allows the system to be used as a simple fleet tracking solution. This may be more meaningful if your fleet also requires your cars to have Insurance Approved fitted devices.
Thatcham changed their tracker classifications in 2019. This system is a Category S5 VTS and is equivalent to the old Cat 6 with ADR tags. The old Cat 5 is now a Category S5 VTS Plus with immobilisation and is the next level up from the device listed here - called iMOB see link below.
